Black Friday?

Our bellies are full and then we decide that we need to shop? To work off those extra calories in a massive crowd of people whose main objective is to get that last $5 sweater before you do?

I am talking about the infamous Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.  The day where the men USUALLY stay home while the women gather up all the great bargains of the year.  I can say that I have only braved this a couple times in my life and now would rather stay home while doing my holiday shopping online.

The term "Black Friday" originated in Philadelphia around 1966 in reference to the heavy traffic on that day.  More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead to refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers go from being in the red (i.e., posting a loss on the books) to being in the black (i.e., turning a profit).

The news media frequently refers to Black Friday as the busiest retail shopping day of the year, but this is not always accurate. While it has been one of the busiest days in terms of customer traffic, in terms of actual sales volume, from 1993 through 2001 Black Friday was usually the fifth to tenth busiest day. In 2002 and 2004, however, Black Friday ranked second place, and in 2003 and 2005, Black Friday actually did reach first place. The busiest retail shopping day of the year in the United States (in terms of both sales and customer traffic) usually has been the Saturday before Christmas. So if you dare, go out there and pick up that Lego Rock Band for me too!

How to Cook a Classic Thanksgiving Turkey

Thanksgiving is almost here and what is the season of thanks without a turkey?  This is by far the most classic part of the thanksgiving feast - a part that most of us indulge in.  Here is a great recipe to help make the day with family and friends much easier so that you can sit down, relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Classic Roast Turkey

PREP AND COOK TIME: About 10 minutes to prep, 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours to roast, and at least 20 minutes to rest

MAKES: Allow 3/4 pound uncooked turkey per serving, or 1 pound if you want leftovers

NOTES: If using a frozen turkey, start thawing it in a pan in the refrigerator 3 to 4 days before roasting, depending on its size. During roasting, if turkey overlaps the pan rim, tuck a strip of heavy-duty foil along the sides of the pan to keep fat from dripping over.

1. Remove and discard leg truss from turkey. Pull off and discard any lumps of fat. Remove giblets and neck (they're often packed in the neck or body cavity) and save for gravy. Rinse turkey inside and out; pat dry. Rub turkey all over with butter.

2. Place turkey, breast up, on a V-shaped rack in a 12- by 17-inch roasting pan, or one that is at least 2 in. longer and wider than the bird. Insert a meat thermometer through thickest part of breast to the bone. (If using an instant-read thermometer, insert when checking temperature later.)

3. Roast in a 325[degrees] or 350[degrees] (depending on size of bird) oven until thermometer registers 160[degrees] (C).
